Board hears how media specialists, policy and appeals handle library challenges

Board members raised persistent community concerns about library content and asked about the selection process. Katie Barker said media specialists follow policy-based selection criteria and that the district updated that policy last year. "The media specialist uses their judgment when ordering materials, but the policy says that the board is ultimately responsible for the selection or continued use of instructional materials," Barker said.

Barker explained the appeals path: a parent may request review through the media specialist and escalate the concern to the district citizens review committee; she also noted parents may request that a specific student be restricted from accessing particular materials by working with school administration and the media specialist so the restriction is recorded in the student file. Board members asked staff to keep front-end review rigorous and to monitor book-fair titles closely.
