Planning staff told the board that four homes on Meridian Street will be closed and prepared for demolition as part of the new police headquarters project. Environmental testing began last week and staff said permits from IDEM are pending; if approvals arrive quickly the contractor may begin demolition before Aug. 10 but the board authorized a conservative closure window of Aug. 3–Aug. 31.
"They told us about 2 weeks for the demo," said Ben Pacharger, summarizing contractor expectations and noting the request covers alley access and two parking spaces on Meridian Street rather than lane closures on the Big 4 Trail.
Planning and project staff said they will sequence work so apartment residents can use alternate egress as crews progress north and south. The board approved the requested closures by motion and voice vote; no roll-call tallies were recorded in the minutes. The closures are described as conservative to allow for permit timing and any brief schedule overruns.
