Dorchester 02 staff outline state textbook adoptions, new leadership and math coaching grants

Katie Barker, the district's curriculum presenter, told the board the bulk of Dorchester 02's instructional materials come from the state adoption process and that teachers lead campus-level review before district adoption. "Our teachers really drive all of the work that happens at the district level," Barker said, describing sample-material review, school consensus and a district-level decision process to ensure standards alignment and continuity for students who transfer midyear.
Barker also highlighted two state grants that will bring new supports to the district: a South Carolina Instructional Leadership pilot grant (to expand principal and aspiring-leader development) and a Zearn math coaching pilot that will place math coaches at Oak Brook Elementary and Eagle Nest Elementary. Board members asked how the pilots were selected; Barker said both schools applied and demonstrated both needs in math and teacher buy-in. The district will present additional details to the board as implementation timelines and coaches are confirmed.
