Commission approves temporary closure of Ellis County Health Department for statewide conference

The Ellis County Commission voted to allow the Ellis County Health Department to close from Monday, March 30 through Wednesday, April 1 so staff can attend the governor's public health conference in Wichita.
Melissa Miller, speaking for the health department, said the conference — centered on the theme “1 Kansas, 1 health” — will offer sessions on lead exposure prevention, strategies to reduce disparities, grant writing and immunization updates. Miller told the board the department will use a workforce development grant to cover hotel registrations and that staff will schedule routine appointments around the closure.
Commissioner Nathan Leiker moved to approve the closure and Chair Neil Younger seconded; the motion passed with the commission’s recorded approval. Miller answered commissioners' questions about prior public reaction to short closures and confirmed the department would provide advance notice to the public.
