Ellis County OKs KDOT grant to replace Saline River bridge and convert two structures to culverts

Ellis County Commissioners on March 3 approved a Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) agreement under the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program for Project 26 C-5390-01.
Public Works Director Brendan Mackay told the board the award covers replacement of FAS Bridge No. 120 (about 12.5 miles north and 0.5 miles east of Ellis over the Saline River) and funding to remove and replace FAS Bridge No. 360 and OS Bridge No. 577.0-438.9 with culverts. Mackay said the KLBIP grant provides up to $4,300,000 for 85% of construction and construction engineering (CE) costs, with an additional $60,900 from KDOT for the two closures—amounts that total up to $4,360,900. Ellis County is responsible for 15% of eligible Construction and CE costs up to KDOT’s funding limit and 100% of costs beyond that, as well as any non-participating costs, preliminary engineering, right-of-way and utility adjustments.
The commission voted 2–0 to approve and sign the agreement. No amendments or alternative funding sources were recorded in the meeting minutes. The transcript notes the replacement structure for OS Bridge No. 577.0-438.9 was completed Feb. 13, 2026, and work on the FAS Bridge No. 360 replacement (an 8-foot diameter CMP with head and wing walls) began Feb. 16, 2026.
