Geneva County Commission asks state for $275,000 payout instead of resurfacing Highway 52

The Geneva County Commission voted Feb. 23 to ask the Alabama Department of Transportation for a $275,000 payout in lieu of a full resurfacing of the three-mile stretch of Highway 52 near Malvern. Engineer Justin Barfield said the State’s initial estimate for resurfacing was about $370,000, but county and state engineers agreed the road does not currently need full resurfacing.
Barfield told the commission that the State indicated a $200,000 payout would be automatically approved, but Commissioner Weston Spivey moved that the county request $275,000 to cover anticipated needs; Commissioner Bart Wilks seconded and the motion passed with a recorded 4-0 vote. Barfield added that the department does not expect maintenance responsibility to transfer to the county until some time in 2027, so the payout is to be used at the county's discretion if approved. The commission will send a formal letter asking for the $275,000.
