County moves to buy two Kenworth dump trucks, flags road crew staffing gaps

Geneva County's engineering staff told the commission they are operating fewer motor graders than needed and that recent storm damage highlighted capacity shortfalls. Engineer Justin Barfield reported six motor graders are in the county fleet but only three full-time and one part-time operators are available; with that staffing it would take about five months to complete a maintenance round on the road system.
Barfield asked the commission to consider recruiting additional grader operators and possibly buying more equipment. Commissioners approved a motion to purchase two new Kenworth dump trucks; the minutes show a vendor quote for new trucks at $223,000 each and an expected quote guarantee from J.M. Wood nearer $185,000. The motion to purchase two trucks passed 4-0. Barfield also said one bridge project and multiple cross-drain installations are underway and the department is advertising for Equipment Operator II, Foreman and Motor Grader Operators.
