Ruston fire chief reports two recent fires, outlines Fourth of July staffing plan

Fire Chief Bruce Allen told the Council the department responded to 22 incidents during the reporting period that required approximately 28 hours of service time and totaled 109 individual responses. He reported two fires during the period; the first was electrical in origin and the second had an undetermined cause, and the department reported no injuries in either incident.
Chief Allen reviewed Fourth of July operations: a community bike parade will begin at 11:30 AM in front of the fire station, followed by family activities at Rust Park and a community photograph. Fire personnel will staff the station throughout the holiday and remain available for emergency response; they do not plan to actively run event operations at Dune Peninsula unless called to an emergency. Chief Bautista noted Tacoma Police Department will manage key traffic control points for the event and Ruston anticipates having at least four officers on duty while seeking to limit overtime costs historically near $85,000 for holiday operations.
Chief Allen also announced department training successes: two members graduated from EMT training and two completed Firefighter I certification; one volunteer with roughly four and a half years of service recently left the department.
The Council thanked department staff and encouraged residents to attend the city's Fourth of July bicycle parade and community barbecue.
