The Ward County Weed Control Board on March 16 approved a series of contracts for 2026, set public chemical‑sale dates for June and directed staff to pursue changes after complaints about late‑season spraying near gravel pits. Board members approved the minutes and bills and unanimously accepted the lone bids submitted for chemicals and applicators.
Weed Officer Derrill Fick told the board the department had $408,134.31 cash on hand as of Feb. 28, 2026. The board adopted Wilbur‑Ellis’s chemical bid and awarded applicator contracts to Dakota Helicopter Spraying (aerial) and Wollschlager LLC (ground). All motions reported at the meeting passed unanimously.
The board also set chemical‑sales hours from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays in June (June 2, 9, 16 and 23) and said it will reconsider a fifth Tuesday after reviewing activity at the June meeting. After public comments about the timing of pit spraying, the board directed Fick to contact the aerial applicator about starting applications in May and asked Fick and Secretary Sarah Walker to prepare a job description and a budget estimate for additional seasonal staff. Commissioners in attendance said any budget increase would need to be submitted to the County Commission as an amended budget request.
