Committee approves joint Sligo Road/HRWN agreement to speed construction, save hundreds of thousands

Eric Hudson briefed the committee on the Sligo Road Extension project. He said the work will be done in phases—first to Marina Road and later to Highway 71 and Mercer Road—and that HRWN has requested rezoning and will install a saltwater injection well that requires turn lanes at Highway 71.
Hudson proposed that the parish bid the turn‑lane work and hold HRWN’s share of the cost in escrow so the parties can build the overlapping projects together. "I see this as an opportunity to complete the planned project while saving the parish approximately $200,000," Hudson said early in the presentation and later estimated total combined savings between approximately $600,000 to $800,000 when accounting for both parties’ scopes.
Marsiglia and Salzer supported completing the project now to avoid duplicated traffic disruption and reduce costs. Hudson said the parish portion is estimated at $1,500,000 and HRWN’s portion at $1,400,000; engineers estimate joint bidding could save $600,000–$800,000. The committee moved and unanimously approved entering an agreement with HRWN, with Hudson returning later with finalized numbers and a drafted agreement for the jury’s consideration.
Why it matters: Coordinating construction with a private developer could reduce costs and shorten disruption for residents, but final savings and contractual terms will be determined in a subsequent agreement.
