Highway update: salt‑barn reroof approved; county approves $25,000 reimbursement for road conversion

Road work updates, equipment maintenance and contract approvals were on the agenda as Highway Superintendent Bob Howell briefed commissioners on operations. Howell said crews continue chip‑and‑seal work, are preparing base on a converted road segment, and have been short‑staffed for mowing on the county’s east side. He reported a MowerMax pump issue covered by warranty and an intent to convert an in‑house truck into a distributor truck to save costs on annual winter maintenance.
Howell said an RFP for bridge inspection was submitted to INDOT and five firms will be scored Aug. 19. Commissioners approved Fort Recovery Lumber to reroof an older salt barn and approved a $25,000 reimbursement agreement with Steve & Marge Reier for conversion work on 850 E (50% of conversion cost). Howell also raised interoperability concerns about the proposed county radio system, saying the highway would need roughly 17–18 radios to maintain operations.
