County engineer seeks termination of landfill environmental covenant to allow parcel sale

Van Buren County’s engineer asked the Iowa DNR to terminate the current environmental covenant on a landfill parcel so it may be sold to an adjoining owner and presented a draft updated covenant; the board authorized the chair to send the letter to IDNR.
County Engineer Ryne Thornburg told the board Jan. 27 that he had prepared a letter to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) asking that the current Environmental Covenant (EC) for the county landfill be terminated to permit sale of Parcel #000540114100220 to the property owner east of the landfill. Thornburg also provided a draft of an updated EC for the board’s review.
On motion by Robert Waugh, seconded by Dale House, the board authorized the chairman to sign the letter to the IDNR requesting termination of the current EC. Ayes: 2. Thornburg also briefed the board on secondary roads activities including core sampling at the county farm, minor materials inspection assistance for a City of Keosauqua project, and the imminent arrival of a new Cat motor grader expected Jan. 29.
The minutes record the parcel identifier and that action was taken only to authorize sending the termination request to IDNR; no sale was recorded as completed during the meeting.
