Kalen Hunter, Destination Development Specialist at the Virginia Tourism Corporation, presented the VATC Destination Marketing Organizations Strategic Planning model to the Patrick County Tourism Advisory Council at its Feb. 27 retreat and distributed handouts and a presentation folder to attendees. Hunter directed the council to VATC.org for additional tools and resources.
Hunter highlighted VATC’s capacity to work directly with localities on strategic planning and destination development. The retreat record notes that Patrick County posted 17.1% growth in 2023; James (Chair) said the county will work with Hunter and VATC to develop a local strategic plan in the near term. The presentation emphasized planning assistance rather than immediate policy or budget commitments.
Next steps noted at the retreat include follow-up between county staff and VATC to scope the strategic plan and schedule detailed planning sessions. No formal vote or funding decision was recorded during the retreat.
