Van Buren supervisors will assume duties for Vernon Township after trustees resign

The Van Buren County Board of Supervisors voted Jan. 27 to exercise the powers and duties of the trustees of Vernon Township after all three elected trustees and the township clerk resigned in December and January.
Under Resolution #01‑27‑2025B, adopted unanimously by the two supervisors present, the county will perform duties assigned by law to the Vernon Township trustees until the vacancies are filled at the Nov. 2026 general election. The resolution also designates the Van Buren County Auditor to serve as township clerk in the interim. The action cites Iowa Code §69.8(5)(b) as its authority.
Resident Eugene Wenke of Mt. Sterling asked when the board would consider documents he filed in the county auditor’s office on Dec. 23, 2024, requesting a fence viewing with an adjoining property owner. Supervisor Dale House said he was aware the adjoining owner was pursuing installation of a fence and a flood gap, but the board had not scheduled a meeting with county attorney staff to receive instructions on fence‑viewing duties and therefore could not provide a date for action.
