The commission approved an add-on resolution to acknowledge a vacancy in Tennessee State House District 93 and to set an expedited schedule for filling the seat: applications due Tuesday 05/05/2026 at 5 p.m., interviews on Wednesday 05/06/2026, and an appointment later that day if the resolution passed.
Chairwoman Chaunte K. Avant sponsored the item. Commissioners debated the compressed timeline, with several expressing concern about transparency and community notice. "That is such a short notice," Commissioner Mills said, questioning how the process was decided and urging more opportunity for public input. Commissioner Brooks asked that social media, TV and radio outreach be used to maximize public awareness; staff said a press release and social channels would be used.
Commissioner Wright moved to suspend portions of Rule 36 to allow the add-on; the motion was seconded and carried. The Clerk reported the add-on vote as 10 ayes and 1 abstention. If enacted, the schedule calls for committee interviews and a special-call commission meeting the following day to make the appointment.
