KDEM reports cell‑tower damage from tornadoes, CoW upgrades and radio grants for county responders

Humberto Marcenaro, Emergency Communications Radio Training and Exercise Specialist, Kansas Division of Emergency Management, briefed the committee on communications support this spring: four cell towers were damaged by tornadoes and two have been repaired, KDEM continues to support fire‑season and spring storm responses, and staff are upgrading the Communication on Wheels (CoW) unit.
Marcenaro said KDEM distributed 30 mobile radios recently under a grant program and that another grant opportunity will be available soon; he also noted KDEM will support FIFA World Cup events. The briefing emphasized ongoing work to maintain and augment field communications for county and local responders.
