Schools, athletics and STEM programs receive top grants from Hammond mayor's gaming fund

Several of the largest grants approved by the commission went to local schools, athletics and educational programs. Smaller but material awards (generally $5,000–$10,000) were distributed to youth sports clubs, after-school programs and arts organizations.
Councilman Salinas praised staff organization and singled out the commission administrator, saying, "Over these past couple of years now, you've kept things, really organized and, kept us all on track." That commendation followed the long sequence of motions and votes approving each organization. The commission president noted the panel tried to maximize the number of organizations served within the constrained fund this year.
The meeting transcript shows each award was moved and seconded on the record and carried by voice vote. Staff will follow up with winners about paperwork and check pickup, with disbursement expected toward the end of May.
