Council approves July 4 festival with limited beer sales near band shell

The Common Council approved a resolution allowing the City of Monroe Parks and Recreation Department to stage a July 4, 2026, celebration in the city park that includes a daytime festival and an evening fireworks display. The Park & Rec board authorized staff to sell beer and fermented malt beverages from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at a location east of the band shell.
A council member expressed concern about alcohol consumption outside a clearly designated area and said they would support approval with the caveat of ensuring assigned boundaries for on-premises consumption. “While I love the July 4 event, I don't love the alcoholic beverages being consumed without a designated and assigned area for those who are of age,” the council member said. Staff confirmed the designated area is east of the band shell near the bleachers and noted liability coverage and any required permits were attached to the permit request. The council approved the resolution by roll call.
