Resident urges council to note data-center growth and support county moratorium

Sam Schumacher, a Monroe resident, used his public-comment time to warn the council about rapid data-center expansion and its local effects. “I realize just how many in Monroe wish not to see data centers brought into this community,” Schumacher said, and urged the city to monitor Greene County actions and planning-committee discussions.
Schumacher told the council that Greene County’s Land Use and Zoning Commission planned a July 13 hearing on a proposed one-year moratorium for data-center applications and said the pause would give supervisors time “to further explore the risks and benefits of data centers and prepare adequate regulation plans.” He said he expected the Monroe planning committee to discuss data centers at its scheduled July 8 meeting and asked that his remarks be entered into the council record two days before that meeting.
The comment was the only public comment on the issue at Monday’s meeting. Mayor Miller and staff later reminded listeners that Greene County would host a presentation on data centers the following Monday and that the planning commission would take up a preliminary discussion on Wednesday, July 8. No formal council action on data centers was taken at the meeting.
