Houston County approves $140,000 feasibility study on county-operated wastewater treatment and sewer service

The Houston County Board unanimously approved on March 18 a $140,000 contract with Carter & Sloope of Macon for an engineering feasibility study into whether the county should construct and operate a wastewater treatment plant and associated sanitary sewer system.
Commissioner Robinson presented the proposal and said the study will assess need and the financial viability of county-run sewer service either within new service-delivery areas or for residents currently without sewer access. Chairman Perdue emphasized the study is strictly exploratory: its purpose is to determine if there is a viable business case before any policy or construction decisions are made. The study is expected to take about one year and will be funded by Water Department Professional Services.
