Residents urge review of property reassessments, cite inconsistencies

At the start of public comment, Claremont residents raised concerns about recent property reassessments and asked the board to investigate possible widespread errors.
"On this $640,000 property, there's over $300,000 worth of incorrect assessments on it," Brian Hamill said, describing line-item corrections the assessor made to his spec house (lowering the value by $9,400 overall after removing duplicate sewer charges and reclassifying concrete). Roberta Hamill told the board her research found multiple instances of incorrectly applied characteristics and alleged that, when errors were corrected, other assessment characteristics were adjusted to produce desired outcomes. She cited the Virginia Constitution and Code as she urged a deeper review and said, "We are looking to our Commissioner of Revenue and the board of supervisors to look deeper into this matter."
Both Hamills asked the county to consider stronger oversight of assessments; Roberta Hamill suggested securing full-time permanent staff under the Commissioner of Revenue to improve consistency and local capacity for ongoing oversight. The board heard the comments; supervisors said they would take citizen concerns under advisement.
