Surry County board elects Breon Pierce chair, Walter Hardy vice chair

Breon Pierce was elected chair of the Surry County Board of Supervisors at the board’s Jan. 15 reorganizational meeting. The board conducted nominations and a voice vote after both Pierce and Supervisor William T. Calhoun were nominated for chair; the board chair announced Pierce received a majority and asked him to assume the gavel.
"Congratulations, mister Breon Pierce, for your election as chairperson of the Surry County Board of Supervisors for 2026," the clerk said after the vote, and Pierce thanked members for their support: "I really appreciate it," he said. The board then opened nominations for vice chair. After an initial vote on one nominee failed to produce a majority, the board held a subsequent vote and selected Walter Hardy as vice chair.
The leadership votes were conducted by voice in open session and followed the board’s procedural rules for annual organization. No roll-call tallies were read into the record beyond members’ oral votes during the proceedings. The election immediately preceded the board’s adoption of bylaws and its 2026 meeting calendar.
