Board completes closed session and approves slate of appointments to county boards and commissions
Summary
After a closed session to discuss appointments authorized under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, the Surry County Board of Supervisors certified the session and approved multiple reappointments and new appointments to local boards including the Board of Zoning Appeals, Wetlands Board, Highway Transportation Safety Commission, Economic Development Authority, Social Services Board and Youth Services Citizens Board.
The Surry County Board of Supervisors convened a closed session under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act to discuss recommendations for appointments to county boards and commissions. County attorney Lola Perkins cited the statutory authority for closed session and later read a certification resolution under the Code of Virginia that the matters discussed were lawfully exempt from open-meeting requirements.
Following return to open session the board moved, seconded and approved a package of reappointments and appointments across multiple boards. Supervisor Walter Hardy read the slate, which included reappointments to the Board of Zoning Appeals (Roger Clayton Jr., Dr. Jeremiah Williams) and multiple Wetlands Board, Highway Transportation Safety Commission, Economic Development Authority, Social Services Board and Youth Services Citizens Board seats; several terms were retroactive and specific term dates were recorded in the motion.
The motions carried by voice vote with no recorded opposition. The board adjourned to its next regular meeting on Dec. 4, 2025.
