Surry County highlights new fire/EMS vehicles—cash-funded purchases, medic unit expected online in January

During the county administrator’s report, staff and emergency-services personnel described two new apparatus on display outside the county facility.
George Phelps described a 2023 Ford F550 initial-attack mini-pumper purchased for the Dendron Volunteer Fire Department at an approximate cost of $415,000 and a 2023 Ford F554 4x4 medic unit purchased for Surry County emergency medical services at an approximate cost of $398,000. Phelps said the 4x4 design helps reach off-road driveways and that the medic unit is targeted for service entry around Jan. 15 pending state licensing, inspection and radio installation. County staff clarified the purchases were cash-funded and not financed through debt.
Board members thanked first responders and emphasized that the equipment demonstrates funds going to public safety operations. No debt financing or long-term borrowing for these particular units was reported during the meeting.
