County unveils new web mapping tool to help residents and developers search property data

Jamie Christiansen, president of Civic Vanguard, demonstrated a new county web mapping application the firm built as part of its service to Surry County. The live demo showed GPS location, a single search box for address, name or tax ID, links to assessment records, aerial photography (March 2025), zoning filters and wetlands/floodplain layers.
Christiansen showed tools intended for property research and economic-development site selection, including a profile tool that generates elevation and site data and an advanced query that can find parcels by zoning and acreage. "This is part of our service… it is now available for folks to go to this new website," Christiansen said and asked board members to try the link during a two-week soft rollout before the full switchover in early December.
Board members praised the functionality during the demonstration and staff said the new site will improve access to land-use data for entrepreneurship and planning. Implementation steps include a two-week parallel link and a full transition in early December.
