Representatives from the Crater District Area Agency on Aging presented program data and described services available to Surry County seniors.
Renata Sharnik, the agency CEO, and Shalisha Hill, nutrition and wellness specialist, said the agency provided 6,158 home-delivered meals regionwide this fiscal year, with Surry accounting for about 15.6% of regional deliveries; congregate (senior center) meals totaled 1,759 in the county and the agency reported providing nearly 94,901 hours of engagement across sites. Hill described nutrition checks performed by meal drivers as an important safety function, and noted a farmer’s-market voucher program that provides a $50 EBT-style card to participating seniors. Hill also discussed a diabetes prevention program (DPP) that aims to reduce progression to type 2 diabetes through weight loss and increased activity.
Board members thanked the agency for partnerships with social services and discussed funding sources. The presenters said primary funding comes from federal and state sources as well as local contributions and that county investment can increase service capacity. Supervisor Pierce asked for clarification about per-county funding shares; agency staff said funding is allocated based on demand and not as a fixed percentage per jurisdiction.
