City Manager Elizabeth Borstad told the City Council of Athens on July 13 that city infrastructure suffered “severe losses in multiple locations to the tune of about $1.3 million” following the June 14 flooding. The council unanimously approved a resolution declaring a local disaster to help the city pursue potential reimbursement and grant funding.
Borstad outlined specific streets and neighborhoods affected, including Cardinal Street, South Prairieville near the Central Fire Station, Barker Street, Rolling Drive and sections of South Wofford and South Wood. She said the city previously obtained an analysis of the floodplain through a Texas Water Development Board grant and that project‑level engineering work is available to target future mitigation. “The next steps are to identify project‑specific locations, and once we do that, we potentially qualify for additional grant funding,” she said.
Councilmember Katha Lawyer moved to approve the resolution; Councilmember Tres Winn seconded, and the resolution carried unanimously. Councilmembers asked staff to review additional trouble spots such as E. Tyler near CVS.
