Shelby County committee forwards District 93 appointment to full commission without recommendation

County Attorney Megan Smith told commissioners that, under the Tennessee Constitution, the clerk’s formal recognition of a vacancy and there being less than 12 months remaining in the term made it appropriate for the commission to act now. “Having this election today is within the bounds of law,” Smith said.
Committee members heard statements from multiple applicants and asked questions about strategy and constituent priorities. After the presentations the item was moved and seconded to be sent to the 1:00 p.m. Commission meeting without recommendation; the motion was restated on the record and carried without objection.
The committee did not record a roll-call vote; the motion was advanced by voice and will return to the full Shelby County Commission for a final appointment vote at the scheduled meeting.
What happens next: The full Commission will consider the appointment at its 1:00 p.m. meeting; commissioners and applicants may appear again and the Commission will make the final selection.
