Hillside Envision asks to place large sculpture on courthouse lawn; commissioners await final design

Dody Burke of the Hillside Envision Board asked commissioners to allow a sculpture between 15 and 20 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet in diameter to be placed on the courthouse lawn, proposing a site north of the Christmas tree on the southeast corner. Burke described the sculpture as constructed of steel, concrete and cast aluminum. Commissioners expressed concern about siting on government property and any potentially offensive imagery, and said they would not approve placement until they had a final design to review.
Commissioner Rein told Burke county staff would need two weeks to determine whether underground electrical or water lines are present at the proposed site. The commissioners scheduled a follow-up appointment for May 18 at 10:00 a.m. and made clear no motion to approve the installation would occur until the board had a final draft to consider.
