Federal bridge grant could leave Pawnee County with roughly $500,000 local match

Kurt Demel, head of Pawnee County Road/Bridge, told commissioners on April 13 that the State's Local Rural Bridge Replacement award will cover 90% of the cost for selected rural bridge projects, leaving participating local governments responsible for the remaining 10% match. Demel said the award covers Comanche County, Pawnee County and the City of Kinsley and that Pawnee County’s 10% share could be approximately $500,000.
Commissioner Miller asked whether federal participation would require additional federal compliance such as a NEPA review; Demel said, "We will need to follow federal regulations." Commissioners approved a separate Hammeke Electric quote of $2,409.68 to move electricity to a new pole for a county bridge-related job, and they approved a Federal-Aid Fund Exchange to convert $93,532.27 in federal funds into $84,170.04 in state funds for 2026.
Demel also reviewed county project maps showing current drainage projects and a 911 address sign replacement effort. The board voted 3-0 on the electric quote and the fund-exchange request; no final action on the larger bridge projects was taken at the meeting beyond the informational presentation and routine contracting approvals.
