Planning commission recommends adoption of Surry County 2040 comprehensive plan amendment

The Surry County Planning Commission voted on Feb. 23 to recommend the Surry County 2040 comprehensive plan amendment to the Board of Supervisors. After a presentation by Summit Design and Engineering, a commissioner moved to forward the amendment and the motion carried on a voice vote with no opposing voices recorded on the record.
Consultant William Tepols, a planner with Summit Design and Engineering, summarized outreach and revisions to the draft plan, saying the project team had "a lot of comments on the draft document, and of which we went through, 95 comments." Tepols described technical edits, an updated future land‑use map based on assessor data, a solar overlay to identify existing installations and align solar with agricultural uses, and additions required by state code. Chair Wooden opened a public hearing and, after no members of the public registered to speak, closed the hearing and the commission proceeded to a recommendation vote. The commission will present its recommendation and the consultant presentation to the Board of Supervisors prior to that board’s public hearing.
