Commission weighs treating battery energy storage as conditional use in ET district

Commissioners raised safety and definition questions about battery energy storage systems during the ET district update. “One example of that of a new use would be battery energy storage systems,” Perkins said, noting the technology was not a prominent consideration when the ET district was enacted. Commissioners suggested separating definitions so small consumer-vehicle battery technologies are excluded while large-scale installations receive distinct review paths. The commission did not take action; staff said the issue will be addressed in the draft ordinance and returned for public hearing.
