County to seek state grants for Ararat high-hazard dam repairs; projects estimated near $900,000

Mark Vernon (Speaker 9), the county's erosion and sediment control and stormwater administrator, outlined a set of projects to bring several high-hazard dams (Dam Nos. 2, 28, and 63) into compliance with state dam-safety standards. He said some low-level drain gates are nonoperable and spillways need repairs; one project was estimated at roughly $900,000. Vernon told the board state grants are available with varying match requirements (a 70/30 match was mentioned for one grant type; another engineering-per-report grant would pay 90% with a 10% local match).
Vernon requested the board approve resolutions supporting grant applications and committing to front funds as needed for project delivery (reimbursement would follow if grants are awarded). The board voted to approve the resolutions and commit to the local match and budget placement for projects to be paid up front and reimbursed if grants are secured. "We're estimating that project to be somewhere around $900,000," Vernon said; he also noted grant application deadlines and that the state grant cycle closes March 31 for certain programs.
