Warrenton-Hammond board begins rewriting goals with focus on early literacy, staff retention and community ties

Superintendent Trip Goodall said the district’s current goals are outdated and introduced a goal-setting exercise at the Sept. 25 work session of the Warrenton-Hammond School District No. 30 Board of Directors. "The Integrated Guidance will direct the goals," Goodall said, and staff suggested reviewing progress more frequently than the traditional mid-year schedule, possibly on a quarterly basis.

Board members individually listed and then compared their top priorities. Board member Alex Cabalona said the board should prioritize "Student Achievement, K-3 Reading and 9th Grade on Track," and asked whether "students [are] getting where they want to go." Board member Krystal Pike emphasized an early-level academic foundation and teacher retention. Board member Tabbitha McGrorty called for broad community engagement and greater CTE course offerings, adding safety and security as a priority. Board member Neal Bond highlighted multiple student pathways (CTE, college, workforce) and clear communications to families about the board’s role.

Board Secretary Andrea Holmstedt will consolidate the members’ notes, align them with the district’s Integrated Guidance (IGA), and draft workable goals with key performance indicators for the board to review at the next meeting. The group also briefly discussed creative curriculum options as potential strategies to meet learning and pathway objectives.

Next steps: staff will prepare a draft goal document and suggested indicators for board review and possible adoption at a future meeting.
