Burke County to negotiate lease with Duke Energy for new Lake James access area

Sarah Shabane presented a proposed lease with Duke Energy for a 10.6-acre Fauna Flora Access Area at the end of Eagle's Nest Way on Lake James, including two paved boat ramps, parking, lighting and restrooms, to be operated in partnership with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Shabane said the site would have no user fees and the county would be primary operator for day-to-day maintenance while Wildlife Resources handles operations tied to boating access.
Commissioners asked about upkeep and liability; County Manager Brian Bridal said there would be no lease cost to the county and county attorneys had reviewed liability allocations. On motion, the board authorized the county manager to negotiate and execute the lease subject to county-attorney review; the vote was unanimous.
