Commission supports light thinning, advises Select Board on Original Town House parcel

Commissioners reviewed a field assessment of the Original Town House site on Hollow Hill Road and discussed management options for the roughly 3.7-acre parcel. Tim Nolin reported the stand likely was last thinned 40–50 years ago and is now overcrowded in areas; he recommended small-scale thinning to improve canopy spacing and forest health, using cut-to-length equipment to minimize ground disturbance and avoid large skid trails.

Tim provided an estimated yield of 4–5 loads of timber with revenue of about $4,000–$6,000 and suggested timing work to align with the upcoming white pine seed drop to encourage regeneration. Members emphasized site sensitivity after identifying scattered cut stones and linear formations and recommended additional historical research with the Historical Society. Commissioners clarified that the property decision authority rests with the Select Board and that the Conservation Commission's role is advisory; the Commission will convey its support for light thinning to the Select Board and follow up on possible signage and coordination.
