But when they blur, then the boards kind of risk micromanaging superintendents,” Nelson said.
Nelson outlined a typical timeline she recommends: a feedback-only session in January or February, a written evaluation and contract decision by March, and renewal confirmations in a spring closed session. Board members repeatedly pressed for fewer, more measurable goals so evaluations would be less cumbersome; Heather Chabria said she wanted “a better record for him moving forward” and favored superintendent-drafted goals tied to board priorities. The board also asked whether OSBA assistance would add cost; members agreed to continue their current process this year while considering outside support later.
