Vernonia announces summer school grant and an expanded K–12 summer program starting July 7

Superintendent (Speaker 5) told the board that Vernonia was awarded a summer school grant and moved quickly to finalize programming after a short state turnaround. He said roughly 60 students signed up in the first week and the district plans staffing for up to about 80 students, with a k–12 program running July 7 through Aug. 1 and an 80‑hour requirement for the program.
The superintendent described program components including online credit‑recovery for high school, enrichment classes for grades 9–12 run by Jen Schramm, middle school interventions, and elementary supports to address reading and math fluency. "We did apply for the summer school grant. We received it," the superintendent said. Staff noted logistical challenges with quick notification and will finalize the state submission and staffing next week.
