District to replace YouthTruth survey after mixed results on students naming a trusted adult

Board members pressed staff for clarity on how the district will measure students' sense of connection to adults at school. "We are moving away from the youth truth survey next year," the Staff member said, explaining the ESD no longer covers the survey cost and the external instrument wasn't asking the questions the district needs.
Staff cited grade-level results from the Oregon student health survey and YouthTruth: for a question about an adult who "really cares," 6th graders reported 73%, 8th graders 95% and 11th graders 84%. The Staff member said the district will build its own internal survey in fall and will administer it to students, staff and families with an eye to avoiding survey fatigue (likely fall and spring administrations). Board members also discussed advisory time: intermediate school uses Wayfinder material on early-release Wednesdays while high-school advisory varies by teacher, and Tanner will make an August presentation on reshaping advisory for relationship-building.
The board asked staff to present proposed survey questions and an administration schedule so that results can be compared year to year and used as part of the strategic-plan monitoring.
