Vernonia SD wins summer school grant; program to run July 7–Aug. 1 for credit recovery and enrichment

The district secured a Summer School grant to fund high school credit recovery through VFA, middle-school interventions, K–12 enrichment and field trips. About 60 students have expressed interest; meals will be provided through the summer meals program.
Vernonia School District received a Summer School grant to support credit recovery at Vernonia High School through VFA, middle‑school interventions, and K–12 enrichment programming that will include field trips. Superintendent Jim Helmen told the board the program will run July 7–August 1, 2025, and that staff will use STAR reports to tailor instruction to student needs.
About 60 students have expressed interest to date; signups were voluntary rather than district‑outreach driven. Helmen said the district will use the summer meals program to provide breakfast and lunch during the sessions. The board discussed transportation challenges for students from Mist (alternate routes are longer) and said pickups could be arranged though bus times will be extended.
