MCPS says new elementary curriculum and job-embedded professional learning will support literacy gains

MCPS presented the district's rationale for a new elementary English language arts curriculum and described supports for teachers during the first year of rollout. A presenter said the curriculum is aligned to the science of reading and embeds content knowledge so teachers do not need to pull from multiple resources. "The new curriculum is actually a huge win," the presenter said, crediting board and council support for providing high-quality instructional materials to teachers.
Officials emphasized training and curriculum study as priorities: across-summer professional learning, system and school-based supports, curriculum study to unpack standards and clarify expectations, and monthly work with reading specialists. District staff also said the curriculum includes built-in resources for differentiation (boosts for gifted students and embedded practice aligned to DIBELS), but successful use depends on planning time and school-level scaffolding.
