MCPS identifies 32 schools with students on the "cusp" of literacy proficiency, plans targeted support

MCPS officials said a significant cohort of students narrowly missed proficiency on state assessments and that the district is prioritizing targeted interventions for them. The briefing described those students as on the "cusp," and the district quantified the group: "An additional 1,608 students or another 14.6% of students were within 1 to 3 responses," a presenter said, noting that moving those students would substantially increase proficiency rates.
To address cusp students, MCPS said it is deploying cross-functional instructional teams — combining reading specialists, curriculum staff, special education and English-language services — in identified schools for a prescribed period (10–12 weeks) to support planning and teacher coaching. Officials told the committee they received MCAP data in late August, turned it around in early September, and began targeted support in 32 schools identified as having many cusp students.
