Engineer: move chlorination downstream of booster pumps to stop corrosion and repeated failures

An engineering consultant told the council the repeated pump failures are linked to the chlorination point in the system: highly chlorinated water is passing through stainless-steel pump components and causing premature failure.
"Your chlorine is getting injected into the water below the booster pumps and then passing directly through those, which ... is what's causing them to to break down," the consultant said. The proposed corrective work would replace damaged pumps and valves and re-plumb the chlorination system so chlorine is introduced downstream of the booster pumps. Council members and staff said this design change should reduce the frequency of pump replacements and extend equipment life.
The engineer noted the current configuration likely resulted from repurposing existing building infrastructure during earlier work and that the city has hired a new engineering firm to design a lasting fix.
