Council hears EMS/RFP request, power and rate concerns after local employer closure, and agrees to pursue WUI options

Pat Bennett, representing the Millard County Sheriff Department and Millard County EMS, told council that HB303 requires municipalities to contract for essential services and that the county will run the required EMS RFP on Fillmore's behalf; the council approved the county initiating the RFP process and will ratify the action at the June 23 meeting. Bennett noted the county is not requesting funding at this point and identified the prepared-food tax as a potential financing source.
Councilmember Eugene Larsen reported Mountain View Mushrooms will close at the end of the month, freeing 3 to 4 million gallons of monthly water use and generating excess power that UAMPS will market; he warned that the city's declining kilowatt rate structure is unsustainable and that small, gradual rate increases will likely be needed to avoid bond-rating impacts. Mayor Curt Hare said the city will explore joining the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) program to qualify for wildfire expense assistance but wants analysis of how WUI building codes would affect construction costs. The council unanimously agreed to move forward with the WUI program effort to map zones and consider code changes.
