Resident urges action on speeding on Hill Road; township cites jurisdictional limits
Summary
A Hill Road resident told the Board vehicles travel well above the speed limit and said a car recently took out her fence. Township officials said PennDOT sets speed limits on much of the roadway and Douglass police cannot use radar under state law.
A resident on Hill Road told the Board that vehicles are "travelling well over the speed limit" and described a recent crash that took out her fence, asking the township to lower the posted speed. She said earlier police enforcement attempts — including placement of a speed trailer — did not resolve the problem.
Chief Robert Evans responded that the department can place the speed trailer in problem locations but "can't use speed guns because it is state law that municipalities can't use radar." Chairman Josh Stouch noted that speed limits must be set according to PennDOT standards and that much of Hill Road lies in New Hanover Township, so the Board would need to coordinate with neighboring jurisdictions and PennDOT before changing limits or signals.
