Calhoun County ISD board declines requested relief in parental grievance; two trustees abstain

On Jan. 14, 2026 the Calhoun County Independent School District Board of Trustees reconvened from a closed session and voted to take no action on the relief requested in a parental grievance filed by Chelsea Burriss. The board returned to open session at 7:25 p.m. and adopted a motion that characterized the requested relief as “outside the scope of the board’s authority and differ[ing] from the relief requested at Level One.”
Vice President Dominic Robles moved the motion and Trustee Vinson Phillips seconded. The motion language recorded in the minutes states that “with regard to the concern about the superintendent, I move the board address this according to board policy.” The vote was recorded as AYES: Cindy Alford, Dana Dworaczyk, Vinson Phillips, Dominic Robles and Bill Shrader; NAYS: none; ABSTAIN: Tyler McAfee, Michael Williams. Motion carried 5-0. Two trustees (McAfee and Williams) had earlier recused from the grievance discussion.
Chelsea and Daniel Burriss were listed in the minutes as present to represent the grievance and were among two individuals who spoke during the public-comment portion about the matter. The board’s motion does not grant the specific relief sought by the grievant and directs any superintendent-related concerns to be handled through applicable board policy rather than by granting the grievant’s remedy at the meeting.
