Board hears quarter-one discipline and restorative-justice update; middle schools show increases

Assistant Superintendent Laura Weir presented the district’s quarter-one discipline and restorative-justice report on Nov. 13, comparing this year to the same quarter last year. She reported decreases in incidents at the elementary and high-school levels but an increase at the middle-school level and said disruptive conduct remains the largest incident type, despite a slight overall decrease.
Weir told trustees battery-on-staff incidents have increased and that trustees requested the district disaggregate special-education data from general-education incident reporting to better understand drivers of those increases. She said transportation-related incidents (on buses and at stops) decreased, while classroom incidents rose. On substances, Weir reported tobacco incidents decreased from 25 to 20, marijuana incidents from 17 to 6, and alcohol incidents from 1 to 0; she added that almost all substance-related incidents involved vaping devices at the middle- and high-school levels.
Trustees pressed for a middle-school breakdown and additional context on interventions. Mr. Small asked whether recent cell-phone policy changes affected disruptive conduct; Weir and Dr. Weaver said they would analyze the data further.
