Local PTA president and education advocates urge support for students and criticize state curriculum changes

During the public-comment period, Halcyon Ramsey introduced herself as incoming president of the McKinney ISD Council of PTAs and thanked trustees and district staff for their support. Ramsey said the PTA council’s three priorities for the coming year are building relationships, providing support and training for local PTA leaders, and strengthening advocacy for every child; she also thanked district staff who organized a district-wide school-supplies effort to ensure students begin the year ready to learn.
Angie Beto, representing Public Schools 1st McKinney, criticized recent State Board of Education actions that she said ‘‘voted to whitewash our social studies curriculum’’ and said changes to state reading lists and curriculum content pose risks to student inclusion and representation. Beto urged community members to hold candidates accountable for how they vote on education issues and to advocate for resources for public schools facing funding pressures. Trustees acknowledged both speakers and thanked them for their engagement.
