Jennifer Gomez and Assistant City Manager Shashi Kumar described the comprehensive‑plan update currently underway and the rationale for amending the future land‑use map. “We don't have a whole lot of land left in the city, but what we have, we wanna be very strategic,” Shashi Kumar said, explaining why staff proposed expanding focus from four corridors to ten to guide reinvestment and redevelopment.
Staff explained the comprehensive plan functions as an umbrella policy document that informs zoning and subdivision decisions. The 2017 plan highlighted four commercial corridors (Texas Parkway, Cartwright Road, Highway 1092, Fort Bend Parkway); the update adds six more corridors to help prioritize policy, infrastructure and economic development strategies as the city moves away from being solely a bedroom community.
Commissioners were urged to evaluate zoning and case recommendations against the council’s strategic vision and to consider whether permitted uses, standards or zones need adjustment to meet the city’s desired character.
