Residents demand council discussion of Omni Hotel funding and possible conflicts of interest

During the general public-comment period, several speakers pressed the city council to revisit the Omni Hotel project and its public funding, alleging problematic connections among nonprofits, donors and project partners.

Nino Rodriguez told the council he and other residents see overlapping names across nonprofit boards, foundation grants and project partners and alleged the optics suggest preferential treatment. "There are some names men and residents keep seeing around nonprofit money, foundation power, hotel money, and public decisions," Rodriguez said, urging journalists to investigate. Robin Campbell and Judd Campbell asked the council to put the Omni Hotel on a future agenda for a full public review, arguing earlier public presentations omitted critical details on whether public expenditures complied with state project-type classifications. Council legal staff responded to the gallery that donations and political contributions alone do not necessarily create a legal conflict of interest and that no legal violation had been shown to date. Several speakers asked for a more transparent Q&A and for the council to clarify how public funds were allocated to the project.
